Think Outside the Box

I've been told by many I have a unique personality and although I often wonder what they really mean I just say thank you. When thinking about type A versus type B personalities I for sure know A describes most of me but I did a little googling just to see what it really means. Here is most of me according to the research...

People with Type A personalities are often described as aggressive, ambitious, controlling, business-like, highly competitive, time-conscious, impatient, preoccupied with status, workaholic, hostile, tightly-wound. These types often try to do more than one thing at a time, they lack patience & often finish sentences for others in discussions. Modern technology helps significantly for Type A personalities to multitask. They generally dislike the perceived threat from the environment. The combination of characteristics of aggressiveness, hostility, time urgency, and competitiveness is called the Type A personality. The other end of the spectrum, or what some like to call an easy going personality, is called Type B personality.

I just had to laugh when I read that description, especially the "time-conscious, tightly-wound" part. Even the "finishes sentences" is pretty accurate, I do that with my friends all the time and although I'm very aware I can't stop. The other part of me however is different, I like to be creative, like to sit around and sip coffee with friends, have an extremely unorganized closet and craft room, enjoy having lots of friends some very close some more acquaintances and don't like to make decisions pertaining to restaurants, entertainment, which movie to watch, who should drive, etc.

With my kids I try hard to display a good balance of type A and B. I let messes be messy, let them create how they wish and give choices whenever possible. The other day though as we opened a big box of sidewalk chalk I found myself having an inner-brain battle, which color to choose, what to draw, where to start. Instead of just enjoying and thinking outside the box I was annoyed.

The kids were running around moving from bubbles to chalk and back again while I was stressing out over what to design.

In the end Trexen asked me to create a race track for his monster truck. I chose blue and let my ambitious side take control a bit too much. As Jeff was pulling in the driveway and I could hardly move I realized maybe bending over crawling on the cement was not a great idea for 35 weeks pregnant.

I admire true type B personalities, their ability to go with the flow, forget about time and being content just being. I can see so much of the type A, tightly-wound traits in Trexen, he is serious, all business and likes to get things accomplished. This spring and summer I hope to let colorful chalk remind me to unwind, breath and think outside the box; forget about time, how many other things I could be doing and just let the colors take over not only for me but for Trexen too.
